Windermere Collection is a beautiful grouping of late 18th century styled fabrics, with loosely styled after what was known as "Indienne" . In the 17th century, the method known as “indiennes” referred to wool, silk or cotton fabrics with a printed or painted motif in contrast to woven cloth, where the motifs were created by the variation in the color of the woven fibers. Men’s dressing gowns were "Indiennes" made from these fabrics. The origin of indiennes was India, Persia or China, and these trading routes became both popular and vauluable. These brightly coloured fabrics were immensely popular in Europe, both for clothing and upholstery.
As with any succesful and popular product, knockoffs were quickly in production. In the 18th century, “indiennes” signified printed cotton fabrics, “indiennage” was the printing of these fabrics and “indienneurs” referred to the producers. Ladies fancy dresses were often made from these type prints.
